Dear Students,

We are glad to welcome you to the Department of Ports Management and Shipping (PMS) which belongs to the School of Economics and Political Sciences of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), the largest and most historic University of the country and one of the leading academic Institutions worldwide.

The Department of Ports Management and Shipping is a newly established, highly dynamic and rapidly developing department of NKUA, whose operation was initiated in the academic year 2019-2020. The Department of Ports Management and Shipping enriches the existing Departments of the University of Athens by offering a modern Curriculum that meets the interdisciplinary demands of the fields it encompasses.

Our Mission

The mission of the Department of Ports Management and Shipping is to provide high level integrated multidisciplinary education, produce innovative theoretical academic and applied research and link them to the modern needs of economy and society, with emphasis, among others, on shipping, ports, supply chain and the marine environment.

Our Goals

The main scope of the academic studies at the Department of Ports Management and Shipping is to provide students with:

  • High- level theoretical and applied academic knowledge of international significance
  • Robust and State-of the Art scientific specialization in the fields of, amongst others, shipping and ports, logistics and intermodal transportation, blue growth and marine environment
  • Collaborations and networking with international Universities, institutions and companies taking advantage of the leading role of Greek Shipping worldwide
  • Interdisciplinary studies that contribute to dynamic professional careers in the field of Business Administration and Finance
  • A broader academic framework that supports open minded and critically thinking scientists, executives and citizens, with willingness to contribute to the domestic and international economy and society.

Our Curriculum

The Curriculum of the Department of Ports Management and Shipping is settled in a network of important, modern and dynamic interdisciplinary subjects that include, among others, courses in: business administration in shipping and ports, international economy and trade, financial analysis, accounting, management information systems, quantitative methods, supply chain, marine environment, civil and maritime law, history and international relations in shipping.

Alumni Potentials

Studies in the Department of Ports Management and Shipping aim to provide students with broad multidisciplinary knowledge, qualifications, and skills required in the working environment of businesses and finance and qualify them for the effective management of crucial issues and decision-making in highly competitive sectors such as those of international shipping, transport, and international trade.

The graduates of this Department are trained to be employed as managers in companies, organizations and financial sectors active in the maritime industry such as international shipping companies, chartering agencies, shipyards, coastal zone industries, shipping agencies, port administrations, as well as the wider field of supply chain and transport, such as air, rail and long-distance transport.

Students interested in acquiring further scientific and research education are thoroughly prepared during their undergraduate studies to obtain a reliable background in order to pursue postgraduate studies, thus ensuring additional qualifications and advanced skills.

Academic and Administrative Staff

The Department of Ports Management and Shipping consists of outstanding Academic Staff of international reputation, with experienced and younger members of internationalized academic actions, who cover a wide range of modern and dynamic scientific fields and perform interdisciplinary research and are active in applied research.
